The Hohlandsbourg
Situated on a hilltop dominating the Colmar region and the road to Munster, the Hohlandsbourg castle has became one of the most interesting ruins to discover. Almost completely renovated over the past 15 years it is particularly attractive and plays host to Medieval re-enactments between May and October.
Constructed in 1279 on the orders of the Provost of Colmar, the Hohlandsbourg was modernised and enlarged during the 14th and 15th centuries by the Counts of Lupfen. It was bought in 1563 by Lazare de Schwendi, who improved its defences.
A classified historical monument since 1840, and progressively and painstakingly renovated since the 1990s, the castle has become an historical and cultural focus point.
At an altitude of 620 metres, the Hohlandsbourg castle offers a magnificent 360° panoramic view over the Alsace plain, the Vosges mountains, the Black Forest and the Bernese Alps.
